Two independent surveys suggest WordPress dominating the CMS market by clearly outpacing Drupal and Joomla.
W3Techs finds 55% of the 1 million most visited websites that are run on a content management system use WordPress. This survey says 71% of websites use none of the content management systems while 16% of all websites use WordPress. Joomla gets the second position with 2.8% share and Drupal is at third with 1.8%.
Another survey done by Water & Stone shows the open source CMSes from 2010 continue to dominate in 2011. According to it, WordPress averages more than 640,000 downloads per week, while Joomla comes at second with more than 86,000 per week and Drupal is at nearly 23,000 per week. This survey also shows Concrete5 making impressive gains with 3,070 downloads.
While recognizing the dominance of WordPress, analysts say any of the top three CMSes out there will do the job admirably well.
