Twitter Signs Deal With Google's Russian Search Rival
Russia’s largest Web search engine Yandex and the popular microblogging site Twitter have made an agreement recently, according to which Yandex will show new tweets in its search results instantly.
Twitter has more than 100 million active users worldwide. As per the partnership, Twitter will allow Yandex to access its data firehose of all public tweets, through which Yandex can include the tweets in its search results. The tweets can be viewed by users in the Yandex’s blog search and also in the dedicated URL, twitter.yandex.ru.
Yandex is a more popular seach engine than Google, in Russia. It has a market share of more than 60 percent in the country. This deal will certainly fetch a great revenue for Twitter. The financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed by the companies.
Anton Pavlov, Yandex’s Blog Search Manager said, “People share news, exchange opinions and discuss all sorts of matters in real-time all the time. This kind of information will help us enhance our search results.” He added, “We are currently concentrating on social-networking searches. The partnership with Twitter reinforces our efforts in this area.”
Twitter and Google signed a similar deal a few years back. The deal expired last summer and it hasn’t been renewed as Google is favoring the Google+ social network for its social search results.
