Windows Phone to Lead iOS by 2016 : IDC
According to a recent report released by the research firm IDC, Windows Phone will top Apple’s iPhone by 2016 and will become the second most popular mobile operating system in the world after Google’s Android OS.
The International Data Corporation (IDC) predicted that the market share of Window’s Phone is expected to increase from 5.2% in 2012 to 19.2% by 2016 whereas the iOS market share will drop to 19% by 2016 from 20.5% this year.
IDC has also forecast that Android will be the global market leader in 2012 holding 61% of the total market share and its share is expected to decrease to 52.9% by 2016. However, it will retain the number one spot in 2016 despite its fall in market share value. Blackberry’s OS RIM’s share will stay flat with 5.9% in 2016 compared to 6% this year.
IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said in a statement, “Underpinning the smartphone market is the constantly shifting OS landscape. Android will maintain leadership throughout our forecast, while others will gain more mobile operator partnerships (Apple) or currently find themselves in the midst of a major transition (Blackberry and Windows Phone/Windows Mobile).”
IDC has also estimated that nearly 686 million smartphones will be shipped in 2012, which is an increase of about 39% compared to last year.
